چکیده

SMMSS, K. Calcium and carbonate metabolism in the frcg (Rana temporia) during respiratory acidosis. Am. J. Physiol. 2 14(3) : 627634. 1968.-Frogs (R. temporaria) contain large deposits of calcium carbonate in the endolymphatic sacs of the inner ear. Methods are described for determining the quantities of calcium and phosphate lost from frogs made acidotic with carbon dioxide (5-200/o in oxygen) and for determining the increase in base excess of the blood. The results suggest that acidosis causes a fall in the carbonate level of the blood and that the mineral deposits dissolve until the bicarbonate and pH levels of the blood are sufficient to restore the carbonate concentration back to its original value. This is taken to indicate that the blood is normally saturated with calcium carbonate and in equilibrium with the deposits in the endolymphatic sacs.

Respiratory, metabolic, and acid-base correlates of aerobic metabolic rate reduction in overwintering frogs.

Aerobic metabolic rates (M˙o 2) and respiratory quotients (RQ = CO2production/M˙o 2) were measured contemporaneously in hibernating frogs Rana temporaria (L.), submerged for 90 days at 3°C. After 3 mo of submergence in fully aerated water,M˙o 2levels were 61% of those seen at the same temperature before hibernation. Over the first 40 days of hibernation, RQ values (≤0.82) favored a lipid-based ...

Voltage dependent fast calcium current in cultured skeletal myocytes of the frog Rana temporaria.

Voltage dependent calcium currents in cultured frog embryonic skeletal myocytes at stages of development ranging from 2 to 9 days were studied using the whole-cell patch clamp technique at 19-21 degrees C. Membrane currents were recorded in the presence of 2 mmol/l Ca2+ (outside), and 60 mmol/l CsCl and 50 mmol/l TEACl (inside). In the absence of sodium current two components of inward current ...

New records of trematode parasites (digenea) in the banded frog (Rana camerani) and marsh frog (Rana ridibunda ridibunda) (Anura: Ranidae), from southwest of Iran

Fourteen adult frogs including six banded frog, Rana camerani and eight marsh frog, Rana ridibunda ridibunda were collected from two sites of Chahar Mahal-o-Bakhtiari province at the southwest of Iran and then were examined for helminth parasites. Only Dolichosaccus rastellus  (50%) was found in R. camerani, Skrjabinoeces similis (50%) and metacercarian cysts of Codonocephalus urniger (12....

Strategies of hypoxia and anoxia tolerance in cardiomyocytes from the overwintering common frog, Rana temporaria.

Using ventricular cardiomyocytes of the common frog, Rana temporaria, we investigated the metabolic strategies employed by the heart to tolerate 4 mo of hypoxic submergence (overwintering) as well as acute bouts of anoxia. In contrast to what is observed for the whole animal, there was no change in oxygen consumption in cardiomyocytes isolated from normoxic frogs compared with those isolated fr...
